How Royal Talens art materials changed lives in small-town in Latvia
In the small town of Madona, Latvia, where opportunities are often limited, a donation of art materials from the Royal Talens Foundation has ignited an unexpected creative renaissance at the Jānis Simsons Madona Art School. With a population of just 7,200, this rural community is home to Latvia's next generation of artistic talent.
A small school with big dreams
The Jānis Simsons Madona Art School serves as the town's sole art education institution, providing nearly 200 students aged 7 to 15 with access to comprehensive art education. Despite its remote location, the school has built a remarkable reputation, with several of its graduates continuing their education at Latvia's most prestigious art high schools.
During the 2024 academic semester (September - December), the Royal Talens Foundation's donation introduced students to art materials previously unavailable in Latvia, let alone in Madona. These professional-grade supplies didn't just enhance the quality of education – they transformed the entire learning experience into an exciting journey of artistic discovery.
Transformative impact of quality materials
Art teacher Margrieta Griestiņa witnessed the profound impact firsthand: “I have experience with the graduate course, where older students study. Some of the pupils were lazy during lessons, but after receiving the donation of materials from the Royal Talens Foundation, they somehow began to believe in their abilities and talents and started working much more diligently. They began coming to school more often than required and spent even their free time there, continuing their unfinished work and communicating with peers. The quality of their work increased significantly.”
She shares a particularly moving example: “There was also a case where a student, who had not mastered landscape perspective for 7 years, suddenly began drawing perfectly accurate architecture. This suggests that sometimes a small 'miracle booster' is needed to elevate the educational process to a new level. The donation from the Royal Talens Foundation was just that. High-quality art materials can bring out a new excitement and passion for creativity in students, which is why this donation is so important.”
